Mehtab Bagh (Moonlit Garden) sits directly across the Yamuna River from the Taj Mahal, aligned precisely with the monument. It was here that Shah Jahan reportedly planned to build a black marble Taj for himself. The view of the Taj from across the river with the Yamuna in the foreground, particularly at sunset when the marble glows orange-gold, is arguably more beautiful than from within the Taj compound itself — and far less crowded.
