Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu
Mahabalipuram (Mamallapuram) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with extraordinary 7th–8th century Pallava-era monuments — the Shore Temple overlooking the sea, the Arjuna's Penance bas-relief (world's largest open-air rock carving), the Pancha Rathas (Five Chariots), and cave temple sculptures. The Shore Temple, with waves crashing around its foundations and the rising sun or setting moon, creates some of India's most atmospheric heritage photography.
