Hampi, Karnataka
Hampi, the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire (14th–16th century), spreads across 4,100 hectares of surreal boulder-strewn landscape on the banks of the Tungabhadra River. The ruins of temples, market streets, royal enclosures, and elephant stables are set among massive rounded granite boulders that create extraordinary abstract compositions. The Virupaksha Temple, Vittala Temple with its stone chariot, and Hampi Bazaar form the iconic sites.
